Henry Acres joins the Merritt Centennials as Head Coach and Assistant General Manager, bringing a wealth of international playing experience, leadership, and a proven commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the ice.
A native of British Columbia, Acres enjoyed a diverse playing career that took him across North America, Europe, and Australia. After playing junior hockey in British Columbia, he continued his career professionally in Sweden, Norway, Hungary, and Australia, gaining firsthand experience in a variety of hockey systems and cultures. His international journey has given him a broad perspective on player development, team culture, and what it takes for athletes to advance to higher levels of the game.
Following his playing career, Acres transitioned into coaching, where he quickly established a reputation for building positive team environments while helping players maximize their potential. His coaching philosophy emphasizes accountability, character, work ethic, skill development, and creating a fast, competitive style of play that prepares players for the next step in their hockey careers.
Acres spent the 2024–25 season with the Merritt Centennials as an Assistant Coach, playing an important role in player development and helping guide the organization through its inaugural season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL). His ability to connect with players, build trust, and foster a culture of continuous improvement made him a natural choice to lead the organization moving forward.
As Head Coach and Assistant General Manager, Acres will oversee all aspects of the Centennials’ on-ice program, including player recruitment, development, systems implementation, and day-to-day hockey operations. Working closely with President and General Manager Brad Anstey, he will play a key role in building a championship culture while advancing players to collegiate and professional opportunities.
Henry is passionate about helping young athletes grow not only as hockey players but also as leaders, teammates, and members of the community. His commitment to excellence and player-first approach aligns with the Centennials’ vision of becoming one of the premier Junior A development programs in British Columbia.
